On most every version of “Got My Mojo Workin’” that I’ve heard Muddy Wayers do, there is this little syncopated figure, a right hand piano chord. Years ago, I heard Gatemouth Brown do his take and, he used the syncopation more prominently and also had a descending movement within the chord riff.
So, here’s Gatemouth.
As always, keep a tight hold on your gris gis bag and press pause on the music player located in the side bar before playing the YouTube.
See, he’s got that syncopation as the main riff there and it’s a descending line. Well I was messing around on YouTube and found this Jimmy Smith version (with Kenny Burrell on guitar by the way) and, Jimmy uses that riff too.
Good example of the famous Jimmy Smith grunting during the solo there too. Anyway, I’m still contemplating the notion of “Who did that first?” when I stumbled across this wild version by Bobby Darin!! Got to watch that, right? So, Bobby plays some real credible harp which caught me by surprise, maybe that’s common knowledge but, I didn’t see the movie and never really listened to Bobby Darin much, and he starts singing….and there’s that riff again! Go figure. Then, Bobby plays a couple of choruses in vibes! It’s too much man.
Folks, I have feed problems.
I, like a lot of people, use the Google Reader to keep up with all of my favorite blogs. Shortly after I started using the reader, Jayne told me it would be a good idea to subscribe to my own site, just in case there was a problem with the delivery of the feed then, I would know because, my posts would not show up in the reader. Sure enough, it happened. My posts stopped showing up. Bummer.
Jayne, has done some digital mojo and hoodoo and everything should be back in order. Only problem is; if you subscribe through Google Reader or, anywhere else and have been missing posts then, you need to re-subscribe through Google Reader or whatever reader you were using. So, when I say “only problem”, that’s misleading because, if you do need to re-subscribe then you aren’t seeing this post.
Double bummer.
