There are a lot of things in the press and also circulating the web about Eddie V. Van Halen has just canceled more shows and Eddie is currently under “doctors care” and “undergoing tests”.
As a society we take great pleasure in watching our icons take the plunge into the morass of alcohol and substance abuse. A lot of what I’m reading about Eddie right now has a “wink, wink-nudge, nudge, we all know he’s back on the sauce” tone to it. A lot of the articles are using the phrase “mystery illness” in quotes like that-nudge, nudge, wink, wink.
Now, I’ve seen the videos of Ed playing not up to his par, and the one where he throws the guitar down in frustration and knocks over the amps. And, I know his ex has been to see Oprah and the guy in suspenders in order to pimp a tell-all book (the thinly veiled references to this in the press are more nudge wink-i.e. Is this why he’s back on the bottle?).
I just have to wonder if the “mystery illness” is something neurological. Neurological disorders often require extensive testing in order to reach a diagnosis. And, they can indeed be very mysterious throughout the diagnosis process.
