Bill Otto, Kansas House Republican-District 9, is in the news today. Previously, he posted a video called “Redneck Rap” in which, he was seen wearing a cap that said “opossum the other dark meat” and opining on the current political climate. Some were offended and Otto’s daughters pulled the video. He has since re-posted it.
In the new clip, Otto addresses his Ozarks/Hillbily heritage, defends racism charges and explains the other dark meat.
DISCLAIMER:
1. I do live in the Ozarks but, am not a native.
2. I do not claim to be a hillbilly but, I know many.
3. I have never dined on opossum nor have I ever seen anyone else do so. But, I have heard many people claim that they had.
4. I have never heard of Bill Otto before but, I would have a cup of coffee with the guy.
5. I don’t really know what goes on in Kansas.
As always, fire up the corn cob pipe and click pause on the music player located in the side bar before playing the YouTube.
Note: The actual “rap” starts a little past the half way mark.
Well, there is this video with Nick Cannon that is presumably a comment on how the industry side of Hip Hop could potentially turn artists in to nothing more than minstrel show performers thus, destroying the rap music universe.

O.K., by now, all of you have heard about this guy’s…

…”hot mic.” comment about his wish to castrate a Presidential candidate. And, his obligatory apology and, the obligatory reaction from Obama’s campaign (best thing that could have happened). The fact that this guy still throws around the official title of “Reverend”, implying that he is a man of God, when he trots around saying he’d like to cut somebody’s nuts off seems to be of no interest but, that’s beside the point.
Now we have this guy…

…Nas, or as I like to call him, Nasterisk because of his brilliant manipulation of the media and the use of the asterisk, in the promotion of his record that is not called “Nigger”. Nasterisk has now weighed in on the Reverend. From Gigwise.
“I think Jesse Jackson, he’s the biggest player hater.
“His time is up. All you old niggas, time is up. We heard your voice, we saw your marching, we heard your sermons. We don’t wanna hear that shit no more. It’s a new day. It’s a new voice. I’m here now. We don’t need Jesse; I’m here. I got this.
“We got Barack, we got David Banners and Young Jeezys. We’re the voice now. It’s no more Jesse. Sorry. Goodbye. You ain’t helping nobody in the ‘hood. That’s the bottom line. Goodbye, Jesse. Bye!”
Nice. The voice of a generation. A guy who spends months threatening to make an important socio-political statement with a shocking album title and backs off at the last minute for commercial reasons. A guy whose contribution is; “don’t say what you really mean, take the cash”, belittling old people, activism and preaching.
Jesse Jackson is fair game. He has spent a career putting himself in the public eye but, calling him, or anybody, a “player hater” is vacuous.
Pop stars and celebrities are all the time spouting opinions on politics and social issues and, usually it’s easy to take with a grain of salt. Anybody can say whatever they want, that’s understood. But, this guy, Nas, is a little different. He’s building a career on the premise that what he has to say is relevant, socially and politically. If somebody is fighting for a cause, even one you disagree with, but they believe in what they are fighting for, that still gets respect in my book. This guy though, palms himself off as some sort of rap version of a protest singer but, it’s another marketing ploy. What do you stand for, other than the dollar, Nas?
Shut up and rap, Nasterisk. Take the money and run.
